Capture the beauty of nature in your next quilt with the Arboreal Quilt Pattern by Slightly Biased Quilts. This delightful design offers a fresh twist on classic tree blocks, making it perfect for seasonal projects or year-round creativity. Whether you’re celebrating the colors of fall or the stillness of winter, Arboreal is versatile enough to adapt to any palette.
Designed with beginners in mind, this pattern is easy to piece by machine and ideal for using up larger scraps, making it both accessible and resourceful.
The Arboreal is one simple tree block made in four different sizes. In the class, you’ll make at least one tree in each size, including the large tree, and by the end of the day, you’ll be comfortable enough to chain piece your way through the rest.
Scrap and background fabrics should be cut before coming to class. Fabric needed details and cutting directions will be emailed to you; patterns will be handed out the day of the workshop.

In the workshop, we will explore choosing colors more instinctively, rather than following a bunch of "rules." Learn about Values and Contrast and how to arrange your fabrics by Value (light to dark), then make a one-of-a-kind wall hang
It all starts with a fabric swap at the beginning of the workshop. This is not optional! Swapping with your friends will force you to use fabrics & colors you would normally not use. But the results are stunning, and you will be pleasantly surprised at the outcome. Finished top is about 38" square.
P.S. The tips on value and contrast you learn from Merry will come in handy during our October Workshop!

Emily Taylor is a self-taught artist, fabric designer, and quilter. She has been a creative entrepreneur in the home dec and quilt industry for over 20 years. Her quilting life started in 2009 when she became a fabric designer for Riley Blake.
As an artist, Emily turned to collage as a way to blend quilting and art. To make it easy for us, she has developed unique patterns printed in shades of gray that allows a quilter to use a lot of different fabrics in a variation of patterns and values to create a collage. Her ‘parchment piecing’ technique is not difficult -- it uses small pieces of fabric to build a fusible design that can be added to a quilt, wall hanging, table runner, and more.

Make your very own arpillera. I will show you how to build your composition in stages, just like the women of Chile did! Make your arpillera reflect a social justice issue you feel strongly about (as the women of Chile did), or design it around a place or event special to you. New skills will be stuffed appliqué, three-dimensional figures, and decorative stitching. I structure the workshop to build community with your guild, just as the Chilean women used this time as their sewing therapy. Throughout the workshop, I read passages from the Chilean women, describing what their sewing groups meant to them, and how making their arpilleras helped them cope with what was happening around them.
Indicate when you sign up whether you want to make one from scratch, or from my pattern ($10) or kit ($25).

Learn to conquer curved seams as you stitch the Metro Rings quilt, a pattern reminiscent of the beloved Double Wedding Ring. Your will use the Quick Curve Ruler by Sew Kind of Wonderful for this project. Starting with a roll of precut strips, you will utilize strip piecing techniques and then use your ruler to cut out the curves and trim down your oversized blocks. This method allows you to more quickly complete what used to be considered a complex pattern.
Make it modern or vintage, it’s up to you!
