NOVEMBER PROGRAM:
Emma Jane Powell - Arpilleras: Women’s Political Resistance through Textile Art
Wednesday, November 13, 2025
PARC Campus Doors open at 9:15 AM
Meeting starts at 9:45 AM
Arpilleras were a form of craft art resistance born during the Chilean dictatorship of the 1970-80s. Using applique tapestries closely resembling quilts, learn how impoverished women communicated human rights atrocities happening in Chile with the outside world. We will explore various arpilleras from that time period and what they represent. We will also look at arpilleras today and how this craft art is being recognized. You will even get to see and feel various arpilleras. Learn a little about history, politics, and art of South America during this very captivating lecture.
November Workshop
Emma Jane Powell - Arpilleras
Thursday November 13th at 9:00 AM
St Paul’s Baptist Church
1 Hagerty Blvd.
West Chester, PA (near FEDEX)
Make your very own arpillera. I will show you how to build your composition in stages, just like the women of Chile did! Make your arpillera reflect a social justice issue you feel strongly about (as the women of Chile did), or design it around a place or event special to you. New skills will be stuffed appliqué, three-dimensional figures, and decorative stitching. I structure the workshop to build community with your guild, just as the Chilean women used this time as their sewing therapy. Throughout the workshop, I read passages from the Chilean women, describing what their sewing groups meant to them, and how making their arpilleras helped them cope with what was happening around them.
